Rob Androus Actor Reel
Production | December 9, 2016
Cinefina produces professional demo reels for actors ready to take the next step forward in their career.
In creating our reel for actor Rob Androus, we reviewed dozens of other actor reels. We listened to casting directors and producers to better understand how they evaluate talent when reviewing a reel.
Here is what we learned:
- The best performances should always start at the beginning. If they are not impressed in the first 30 seconds, they won’t view the rest of the reel.
- The running time should be about two minutes.
- Reels with poor quality audio and video is more likely to be passed on.
- Superfluous music and motion graphics detract from the reel.
- Talent must convey presence and performance in their selected scenes.
There is a distinction between an audition and a qualified audition. Casting directors short list actors they already know can play the part even before the audition session if they see a similar performance in the reel.
Actors must lead with what they are best at — their ability to perform.
Many beginning actors build their reels using consumer-level editing software with sometimes amateurish results. A professional reel stands apart from the competition:
- Carefully selected and edited elements sourced from the best quality footage available.
- Technical standards for resolution, aspect ratios, frame rates, formats and codecs and intermediate codecs, sound and color correction, resulting in the best picture and sound possible.
- Separate categories of reels, including comedy, drama, commercial, dancing, stand-up and hosting.
- Unobtrusive title designs and seamless editing.
