DIY Microphone Boom Pole

DIY | March 28, 2014

A professional microphone boom pole can cost hundreds of dollars, but this DIY version cost less than $15 and works perfectly.

Update: our Second Generation DIY Boom Pole is much improved with step-by-step instructions on how to build your own.

A painters pole and a PVC tee purchased from Home Depot does the job. The pole is lightweight and retractable. The pole length is about 3 ½ feet when retracted; the pole length is about 6 feet when fully extended. The Audio-Technica ATR-55 Line Cardioid Condenser Microphone does a good job, but a microphone with an XLR connector is better.

The screw threads on the pole and the tee do not match but it does screw in and keeps a tight fit. A set of BongoTies (elastic tie wraps) acts as a spider shock mount that isolates the microphone from any vibrations or unwanted noise caused by handling the boom pole.

A pair of handlebar grips to reduce noise when handling.
