DIY C-Stands

DIY | March 27, 2014

Custom-built C-Stands using PVC pipes and other materials from Home Depot. Based on the proven design used extensively in television and motion pictures, this DIY version is designed to support small studio lights. Pictured is a finished C-Stand with Slide Dimmer, China Lantern Ball, Light Socket Assembly and Quartz Halogen Bulb.

Detail of 18″ China Lantern Ball (Faux Silk).

Detail of Slide Dimmer.

Detail of Tripod Assembly with Riser. As with industrial C-Stands, it uses a low center of gravity with a surface area for the placement of sandbags. In this case, phone books (not pictured) are used in place of sandbags.

The three legs swivel apart. The weight of the light is positioned over the highest leg for stability.

Detail of screw and nut (underside, not pictured) that eliminates twisting. PVC cement was considered for this project, but broken or worn parts would then be impossible to replace.

Detail of collapsible legs ready for transport. A total of four (4) C-Stands have been constructed for photography and filmmaking.
